Language

Language can be said to be the form of communication of a particular group of people, tribe, society. There are many languages in the world but we are going to be looking at the Yoruba language from the south western part of Nigeria and the UK.
According to Edwards (2007), Yoruba is the first language of an estimated 20 million people worldwide;and another 2 million people speak it as their second language. It is one of the six official languages of Nigeria. The Yoruba population in the UK is made up of a high number of students and professionals who left West Africa for political and economic reasons.

In a recent survey of London school children, Yoruba was reported to be the 9th most commonly spoken language, with speakers scattered across the capital, but with the largest amount in Greenwich, Hackney, Lambeth and Southwark.
Many cultural associations and professional networks encourage speakers to maintain their language in the UK, including the National Association of Yoruba Descendants,Egbe Omo Yoruba.

Yoruba is a very peculiar language.Children in Yoruba tradition are named according to circumstances that surround their birth.
